Tax Relief for Those Affected by Hurricane Matthew: What to Know

By on Jan 5, 2017 in Tax Tips | 0 comments

If you lost your home, vehicle, boat, or any type of possession due to Hurricane Matthew, there are some things that you need to know.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is giving tax relief to victims of Hurricane Matthew. This is mainly directed toward North Carolina residents, but Hurricane Matthew affected a great deal of the east coast. So as a result, any workers who assisted with the relief activities affiliated with any recognized government or philanthropic group will qualify for tax relief. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has issued assistance for taxpayers in Beaufort, Bladen, Columbus, Cumberland, Edgecombe, Hoke, Lenoir, Nash, Pitt and Robeson counties. They will be expected to receive some sort of tax relief.

To learn what other counties are eligible visit the FEMA website as information regarding the relief for this particular disaster changes frequently.

Hurricane Matthew Relief Deadline

The deadline for North Carolina victims is March 15, 2017. This also goes for any individuals and businesses. Taxpayers who received an October 2016 tax-filing extension will not be eligible for this relief. If you fall under this deadline, contact the IRS or a tax relief professional to help you resolve any late penalties that may have occurred during this unfortunate event.

Taxes Due in October

Some of the other businesses that might be affected by the Oct. 31 deadline are farmers and fisherman in regards to quarterly payroll and excise tax returns. In such cases as these, the IRS is waiving any late-deposit penalties that were due between October 4 -19.
